That was evident again during Tottenham's game against Man City on Saturday evening. Tottenham took the lead after just five minutes when Heung-min Son ran onto Tanguy Ndombele's through ball and found a way past Ederson.
To add insult to injury, Jesus was flagged offside. City thought they had drawn level midway through the half when Aymeric Laporte drilled home a sidefooted shot from 10 yards but it was correctly ruled out by VAR and on-field referee Mike Dean when replays showed Jesus had controlled the ball with the help of his arm in the build-up.
But it was yet more frustration for De Bruyne, who could not stop the goal nor initiate a response from his City team-mates.
The only blemish on the evening for Spurs was a suspected groin injury suffered by Toby Alderweireld in the latter stages. It was a danger sign for Spurs, though.
City seemed to have recovered their poise. City had most of the ball. But they did not present the Spurs defence with enough problems.
Too many of their forwards seem to have lost their mojo. Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez always wanted one touch too many. Jesus is a fine player but he is not as ruthless as Sergio Aguero.
Who is? Sometimes, De Bruyne looks exasperated with what he sees in front of him. City tried to rid themselves of their ponderousness and De Bruyne shot just wide five minutes after half time.
An attack broke down, Spurs played the ball out of defence to Harry Kane, who was in his own half. He turned and ran at the City defence, which was suddenly hopelessly stretched.
Kane waited and timed his pass to Lo Celso to perfection. Lo Celso took a touch and drilled his shot past Ederson. Spurs had managed two shots on target and scored two goals.
By the time Sterling and Phil Foden came on soon afterwards, it was too late and City find themselves marooned in mid-table.
Guardiola has signed his new contract. Now he has to start earning it. Mike Dean blows his whistle for full time and what a huge result that is for Tottenham, who have earned a much-deserved win over City to firmly establish themselves as title contenders.
City were dominant in the first half and enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but their pretty football did not equate to goals, and Spurs demonstrated the sort of ruthlessness in defence and attack of champions.
It was Son who opened the lead for the hosts, before second half sub Giovanni Lo Celso put the result beyond doubt.
Mourinho will be absolutely delighted with that performance, while Guardiola has plenty to ponder as his side lie 8 points adrift of the new league leaders with a game in hand.
City have a chance to get the ball in the box. Chance City! De Bruyne's delivery is superb and Dias meets with a point blank header but Lloris parries it away.
He should have scored as City win a corner. The fight seems to be dissipating from the visitors. Kane carries the ball up field and wins a free kick.
Ruben Dias is booked for that challenge. A chance for the visitors to get one back now. Mourinho had planned to bring Gareth Bale on but the Welshman won't feature now as new boy Joe Rodon prepares to make an entrance.
Jesus is next to let fly but there's a white shirt there to get in front of the ball. The defender scored a great free kick against Russia at EURO , but is unable to replicate that effort as his strike hits the wall and is cleared.
The Englishman looks to get beyond Sissoko but the midfielder uses his physicality to shrug the smaller man off the ball.
Kane drives forward once more and draws the foul from Ruben Dias, winning a free kick around 15 yards outside the City box.
Bergwijn makes way for Lucas Moura. That gives City the opportunity to make a couple of changes. Son's set piece is far too strong and goes behind for a goal kick as Pep Guardiola turns to his bench to try and change his side's fortunes.
Spurs have been so organised in defence and just as complete in attack, with Kane leading the line superbly. They are just over 20 minutes from going top of the league.
Spurs double their advantage The hosts counter attack through Kane, who gets his head up and plays in the substitute with a perfectly weighted pass.
The Argentine takes one tough, gets his head up and makes no mistake in firing home. The French midfielder has once again showed what he can do with another positive outing.
His latest attempt draws Lloris out who plucks the ball from the sky as Spurs prepare to make their first change of the game.
Spurs' lethal combination of Kane and Son link up as the Englishman plays his strike partner in behind. Ederson is in no mans land and Son knocks the ball past the keeper but his touch is too heavy and he is crowded out.
Looks like he got a a whack from Sissoko as he went up for the ball. The defender is back to his feet and should be able to carry on.
Dier is there again, holds his position and blocks behind for another corner. City knocking on the door but Spurs deal with the set piece.
A new contract but the same old problems for the Manchester City boss, ones that have not been solved by his new centre-back pairing.
The defensive line continues to be breached as opponents sit deep and pick them off on the counter-attack. Lessons from the Leicester defeat have not been learned.
It is a problem. City lack the energy that is essential if they are to press high without leaving the back-line exposed.
Liverpool's injury problems had left the door ajar for their nearest rivals but if Guardiola is unable to coax more from his players than this, it may be another team best placed to capitalise.
On this evidence, that team might just belong to his old rival Mourinho. If Spurs fans have to take watching that style to win trophies, they will take that.
I wasn't sure Jose Mourinho could do it at Spurs but he makes players work so hard. Spurs did so well without the ball - it was a masterclass from Jose and the team.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho : "For me, I prefer the players to speak because they are the ones, they were fantastic, they gave everything.
They follow a strategy and football sometimes, more than ever, strategy plays an important part. They were amazing.
Harry Kane represents the spirit of all the other guys, the way he works for the team is the way all the other ones do it.
You have the emergency rules, everybody has an incredible friendship and solidarity, everybody was amazing.
We are now essentially a quarter of the way through the campaign, it goes quickly - and having an extra match to play is not the same as having the points in the bag, especially taking into account some uneven recent form.
Spurs, meanwhile, go top with this three points - a full eight ahead of City, with Liverpool able to join them if they beat Leicester tomorrow. If the Foxes take the points, City are nine off the pace.
